Floral waters, also known as hydrolats or hydrosols are obtained as a by product of essential oil distillation (see our suggestion for distilling Floral Waters)
Aromatic plants or flowers are placed in alembic pots and the heat generated releases minute pockets of essential oils contained in the cells. Once the distillate condenses, the essential oil floats on top of the distilled water. If the essential oil is taken off the remaining water is aromatic and has its own therapeutic properties. It contains the chemistry of the essential oils and plants that remains soluble in water.
You can easily and quickly obtain 100ml of a fragrant cosmetic and therapeutic hydrosol or floral water using a Small Distilling Unit or a Distilling Appliance Still. Check our step by step instructions
These waters are safe to use undiluted as skin fresheners, soothing lotions, room and linen sprays, after shaves and wound cleansers.
Try making your own perfume – Recipes
If you leave the essential oil as part of the hydrosol, it has a much stronger aroma and as long as you shake it well has a greater therapeutic action.
These can be added to creams, moisturizers, shampoos, wound cream – see Recipes
Use your own hydrosols with essential oil left in in an Essential Oil Diffuser
Check our Essential Oil types to see what action the oils will have.
